“There are possibly millions of asthmatic children who are destined to a life dependence on medication; these children may never have the chance to see if chiropractic spinal adjustments can help their asthma and provide them with a better quality of life.” - Peter Fysh, D.C.
Mary (not her real name), a beautiful 18-month baby girl, was brought to our office by her mother ten years ago. She was referred by another patient who told them that we could help with Mary’s chronic ear infections, insomnia, and hyperactivity. During the consultation, it was revealed that Mary also had asthma. Her asthma was so bad, in fact, that she required three inhalations of three different asthma medications per day: that’s nine puffs of corticosteroids in a small, 20 pound body, every day! Upon examination, it was found that Mary had several subluxations in her spine, blocking the normal flow of nerve information to her immune system, her ears, and her lungs. After a few corrective adjustments, her earaches stopped and never came back, and her sleep started improving, as did her hyperactivity. It took a little longer for her asthma to improve, but after about one month of regular adjustments, her asthma had improved to the point that she did not need any more medication at all! Some of you might think that the above story is exceptional - however, stories like this one are commonplace in our office and in offices of thousands of chiropractors across the country. We specifically chose a ten-year-old case because even to this day, Mary has been asthma-free, completely.
Dozens of studies have been published, demonstrating the efficiency of chiropractic in treating asthma. For example, a study of 81 children, published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, showed an improvement in over 90% of subjects treated chiropractically. Another study that rated quality of life also showed great results. Yet another showed peak flow rate and vital capacity improve after only a few treatments. Mark`s parents brought him into our office because of asthma problems. They read our article in the newspaper and were willing to try chiropractic because they really did not like all the inhalers he was using. In the year before his first visit, Mark started daycare and he kept getting sick with colds, which aggravated his asthma. He was on so many medications that it really worried his parents. Soon after starting his adjustment schedule, his mom could see a change. He improved so much since that he is now off all of his asthma medications, except maybe one puff of an inhaler at night if he has a really bad cold. One thing that his parents have noticed is that the colds come and go quickly now with a lot less coughing and no wheezing. Not since Thanksgiving has Mark needed his inhaler. Asthma inhalers cause developmental and growth delays. So the least you use them the better. Thanks to Mark`s parents for trusting and giving chiropractic a chance.
Paul Mandel had been diagnosed with asthma. However, none of his prescribed asthma medications were working for him. Paul came to our office complaining of a 'choking sensation', which he had experienced regularly since he was a child. These attacks could last for up to an hour. When Paul was in his late teens, he had actually spent a month in the hospital and doctors were unable to determine the problem with his throat and lungs. Paul also had many injuries in his joints and back due to his work with animals. He felt as though his left ribs were burning; however, the area felt cold to the touch. Paul had pain from the base of his skull all the way down the back of his neck.
With adjustments and cranial work, the pain in Paul's ribs and neck has improved dramatically. After his first cranial adjustment, he experienced one episode of the choking sensation, but has not had another attack since, months later. Overall, he feels better and has more energy. Thank you to Paul for his dedication to his care and for his trust in us.
Ryan Wakeman came to our office in October to see if we could help with his asthma. Ryan's asthma was serious enough to necessitate medication in the form of inhalers twice per day. It was found, during examination, that some vertebrae in his spine were misaligned (subluxation), interfering with the nerves to his lungs. After only two weeks of adjustments, Ryan's condition had improved so much that he didn't need any medication at all! With basketball season coming, he is really happy he came in for care!
